Forever chemicals (PFAS) shrug off heat, water and solvents, yet those same carbon-fluorine bonds let them linger for centuries. The CDC has detected PFAS in 97% of Americans’ blood. A 2025 EU study warns that decontaminating polluted sites could cost about €100 billion every year for decades, and 37 % of European surface waters already exceed safe PFAS limits. BioHalo’s microbial biohalogenation platform replaces toxic perfluoro groups with single-fluorine sites, yielding biodegradable BioFPolymers and tailor-made fluoromonomers while slashing fluorine use and by-products.
To date BioHalo has secured more than 12 million DKK (~€1.6 M) in total funding, including 8 M DKK from BioInnovation Insitute and 4 M DKK in matched grants. They're now in the process of validating and commercializing their new-to-market products F-PHB and NyFon materialsl for high-performance industrial applications.
